FTL: Faster Than Light takes your sci-fi fantasies and injects. “there’s a strange stasis pod that catches your eye…. FTL: Faster Than Light takes your sci-fi fantasies and injects a degree of strategy and reality into them, keeping you on your toes. My inspiration for this Rebel Captain? Let’s just say… “Lady Captain Honor Satsuki Harrington Kiryuin”, a specimen of what seems to me to be the most disruptive species in the galaxy! This event is called 'LANIUSFREESTUFF' in the datafiles. Looking around the area, you discover a number of destroyed Rebel automated ships. In my headcanon, this hints that they might be an “uplift” species, perhaps specifically engineered from Earth insects to be killing machines, but got loose from their masters. This random event occurs in: Abandoned Sector You stumble across a badly damaged Lanius craft. The majority of their bodies are made from nanomachines, giving the illusion of a silvery metallic skin. Though their inhabited worlds are well known, the origins of the emotionless Engi are a mystery. These implacable green death-dealers seem to be identical like earth Mantindae in their anatomy. Its unclear if the Engi are partly organic or entirely mechanical, but its well known that they make exceptional engineers. I imagine it to look like contrantly shifting iron filings. I love these guys with their green CRT monitor faces and friendly demeanor… I wanted to capture their living “silvery skin” made of trillions of nanomachines as mentioned in the canon. “Now, most gracioussss captain, you must join me please in a drink to our alliance!”įTL’s living energy reactors! I wanted these glowstick people to be human shaped with 4 limbs like the game sprite, but with clearly alien psisiology. Also, I was reminded of Necrons from the Lanius habit of spending eons in stasis. High quality Ftl Faster Than Light inspired Art Prints by independent artists and designers from around the world. The new aliens in town! Clearly inspired by Dan Simmons’ Shrike creature, (their 2nd ship is even called THE SHRIKE), I was also reminded of the T-1000 from their habit of turning into liquid metal goo. I had some cues but there were so many details I guessed at for my own interpretation. With the tiny game sprite size, drawing these was almost like literary fan art. I was inspired by the tiny pixel sprites to make portraits of the various aliens. This pattern - calm moments of preparation to hectic, chaotic combat - repeats for as long as the player’s ship survives.Inspired by FTL from Subset Games, and drawn while listening to Ben Prunty’s excellent soundtrack. After a victory, the player collects scrap metal from the wreckage and sends crew members to damaged areas of the ship for repairs before the next jump. Battles are intense, as the player allocates power to various on-board systems (weapons, shields, engine, etc.) in an attempt to destroy the enemy ship before being destroyed. When ready, the player makes a hyperspace jump to a new location, often resulting in a battle with another ship. Initially, the player starts with a basic ship and three crew members controlled via a top-down, blueprint-like view with charming retro line art and pixelated fonts. For the gritty, though, it will be engrossing. It's meant to be a hard game, so a fiery wreck is more likely than success, especially early on. FTL: Faster Than Light is a strategic role-playing game, but instead of controlling a person, the player controls a ship and its crew.
